LIEUTENANT COLONEL (RET.) HENRY C. TURNER, JR.

Henry C. Turner, Jr. is well known in Prince George’s County as a successful land developer who is committed to helping veterans and making his community an even better place to live. His dedication and discipline are family traits instilled through generations of military service that add up to over 110 years of keeping U.S. citizens safe.
Henry’s grandfather, Private First Class James Edward Turner, was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during World War I, while Henry’s father, an optometrist, served as an enlisted soldier during World War II and rose to the rank of Colonel during his 30 years of Army service. Henry and his twin brothers are all graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and each completed 20 years of military service. His sister, the Honorable Ingrid Turner, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy; she retired as a Commander after completing 20 years of military service. The tradition carries on -- Henry’s niece, Leah Turner and nephew, Michael Turner both graduated from West Point in May 2020 and are now Second Lieutenants. His oldest son, Major Langston Turner is an Engineer in the U.S. Army.
Henry served in the Army as an officer in the Quartermaster and Acquisition Corps and is a Gulf War combat veteran. In 1997, he was selected for the prestigious position of Military Assistant to the Acting Secretary of the Army and advised him on policy and operational issues such as acquisition, financial management, logistics, personnel, and small and disadvantaged business programs. He also represented the Secretary at the White House and the Office of the Secretary of Defense, as well as in discussions with members of Congress and private sector organizations. During his 21 years of service, Henry earned numerous awards, including two Legion of Merit Medals, a Bronze Star Medal, and five Army Meritorious Service Medals along with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Joint Staff, and the Army Staff Identification Badges.
A founder of Turner & Associates, LLC, Henry introduced the area to his concept of creating prestigious communities that have a distinctive theme and character. He successfully negotiated and acquired over 335 acres of land and led the company through the creation of three major luxury estate subdivisions in southern Prince George’s County in collaboration with county officials and civic organizations.
Henry is also a principal in HWVJ Enterprises, LLC, a service-disabled veteran and minority-owned company that operates the Marlton golf course in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. They are one of five Black companies who own a golf course, out of over 15,000 golf courses in the U.S.. Henry was inducted into the African American Golfers’ Hall of Fame in 2016. Henry was appointed as the first Chairman of the Prince George’s County Inaugural Veterans Commission. Henry also serves as the First Vice Commander of American Legion Post 381, which he was instrumental in establishing.
Henry has sat on a number of boards, including the Greater Prince George's Business Roundtable and the Maryland National Capital Building Industry Association; he also founded and chaired the Inaugural Prince George’s County Ambassadors' Day, which hosted over 38 foreign diplomats and local dignitaries. Henry has a bachelor’s degree in engineering from West Point and an MBA from Babson College. He also graduated from highly respected military schools such as the Air Command and Staff College and the Defense Systems Management College.
Henry is married to Lieutenant Colonel (U.S.A., ret.) Winifred E. Turner and they live in Upper Marlboro, MD; they have three adult children and two grandchildren.
